Hermes

12 questions · Mythology

Hermes is the Greek messenger of the gods and god of travellers, merchants, orators, shepherds and thieves. With winged sandals he darts at lightning speed between sky, earth and underworld, carrying the messages of Zeus. He is the only god allowed to cross the borders between the worlds freely: as „guide of souls“ he leads the dead into the underworld. Cunning, quick-witted and charming, he is also the patron of thieves: on the very day of his birth he stole the cattle of his brother Apollo. His herald's staff with two snakes is still a well-known symbol today. In Roman mythology he corresponds to Mercury, after whom the fastest planet is named. His emblem is the caduceus, the staff with two snakes. As a child the cunning Hermes invented the lyre, which he later handed to Apollo. Good to know: Hermes carries the messages of Zeus and protects travellers, merchants, orators and thieves. As „guide of souls“ (Psychopomp) he alone leads the dead into the underworld. With winged sandals and helmet, Hermes moves between the worlds faster than any other god.
