Hesse
9 questions · Geography
Hesse lies in the middle of Germany and, with around 6.4 million inhabitants, is one of the economically strongest states. The seat of government is Wiesbaden, but the better-known city lies a few kilometres further east: Frankfurt am Main, home of the European Central Bank and the German stock exchange. That is what Hesse is famous for: Frankfurt as a financial centre, whose towers have earned the city the nickname “Mainhattan”.
That Frankfurt skyline has become the state's landmark: hardly any other German city has so many skyscrapers standing together. The river Main flows through Hesse and joins the Rhine at Mainz, and the coat of arms shows a rearing lion striped in red and white: the “colourful lion” of the landgraves of Thuringia and Hesse.
The state also has quieter corners: the Rhön, the Taunus and the Odenwald, plus Kassel with the documenta, the most important exhibition of contemporary art in the world.
Did you know that Frankfurt Airport is one of Europe's largest and employs more people than some small towns have inhabitants?
