12 questions ยท Mythology
Hestia is the Greek goddess of the hearth, the home and domestic peace. As the quiet, virgin sister of Zeus she tends the sacred flame at the centre of every home and every city. She is the most peaceful of the Olympian gods: in no quarrel and no war of the myths does she take part. And yet she was honoured first everywhere: at every sacrifice Hestia received the first and the last share. So as not to burden her fire, she gave up her seat among the twelve Olympians, tradition says, to Dionysus. In Roman mythology she corresponds to Vesta, whose sacred state fire was guarded by the Vestal Virgins. As keeper of the sacred hearth fire and daughter of Cronus and Rhea, Hestia vowed eternal virginity and remained the quietest, most peaceful deity of Olympus. Good to know: Hestia tends the sacred flame of the hearth: the centre of every home and community. When a family moved, they took embers from the old hearth so as not to break Hestia's fire. Hestia rejected all suitors (including Apollo and Poseidon) and remained a virgin.
