HIV / AIDS

13 questions · History

In the early 1980s a mysterious new illness appeared in the USA: in previously healthy young people the immune system suddenly collapsed. The condition soon got a name: AIDS, the „acquired immune deficiency syndrome“. It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which attacks and destroys the body's defence cells. Without a working immune system, otherwise harmless pathogens become deadly. The virus spreads through blood, unprotected sex and from mother to child: but not through everyday contact. In the early years infection was almost a death sentence, and the disease was accompanied by fear, stigma and exclusion. The medical turning point came with antiretroviral therapy: a combination of drugs suppresses the virus so strongly that today those affected live largely normal lives and can no longer infect others. A vaccine is still lacking, but education, condoms and testing have slowed the spread. Millions of people worldwide live with HIV; the pandemic has profoundly changed our understanding of viruses, the immune system and public health.
