Holy Sites

12 questions Β· Religion & Belief

Some places matter so much to believers that millions undertake long and arduous journeys just to have been there once: holy sites where faith becomes tangible and heaven and earth seem to touch. They are often the settings of ancient events, the goal of great streams of pilgrims and the centres of whole religions. This pack leads to the most important of them: recognise the Islamic Mecca with the Kaaba and the Prophet's city of Medina, Jerusalem holy to three religions and the Vatican as the centre of the Catholic Church, Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus and the pilgrimage site of Lourdes, the sacred river Ganges and the city of Varanasi in Hinduism, the Golden Temple sanctuary of Amritsar of the Sikhs and Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha found enlightenment, Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments and the Christian pilgrimage destination Santiago de Compostela: recognise them by their significance and their history. For some they are the goal of a once-in-a-lifetime journey, for others part of daily prayer: yet at almost all of them people from around the world still come together today.
