Humphrey Bogart

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Humphrey Bogart, born in New York in 1899, was one of the greatest stars of classic Hollywood and is still revered as the epitome of the cool, disillusioned screen hero. With his rough presence he shaped the film noir genre. Bogart became immortal above all through "Casablanca", in which he plays the cynical yet fundamentally noble bar owner Rick: a film full of famous quotes. In "The Maltese Falcon" too he embodied the tough private detective who keeps his feelings hidden. For his role in "The African Queen" he received the Oscar for Best Actor. Bogart died in 1957. In polls he was later voted the greatest male film star of all time. Good to know: Bogart was born in New York the son of a doctor: far from his screen role as the tough cynic. „Casablanca“ made Bogart immortal: the farewell line „Here's looking at you, kid“ is among cinema's most famous. As a disillusioned private eye in „The Maltese Falcon“ and „The Big Sleep“, Bogart shaped film noir. Bogart won his only Oscar for the boozy boat captain in „The African Queen“: alongside Katharine Hepburn.
