Hyperborea

12 questions · Mythology

In Greek myth, Hyperborea is a fabled land “beyond the north wind”, where eternal spring reigns and a happy, immortal people live far from disease and war. It was regarded as an earthly paradise at the very edge of the known world and was sacred to the sun god Apollo. To this day Hyperborea stirs the imagination and appears in literature and legends about hidden lands. Some later scholars interpreted the land as a distant northern region such as Scandinavia or Britain. Beyond Boreas, the north wind, the Greeks told of a land without sickness, war or old age: Hyperborea. Apollo, god of light, spends the winter months there before returning to Delphi: which is why his oracle fell silent in winter. Legend has him flying north on a chariot drawn by swans. The Hyperboreans celebrate their god with endless feasts, music and dance; they can only die once they have had their fill of life and throw themselves into the sea. Where this wonderland was supposed to lie puzzled the ancients themselves: Herodotus doubted its existence, others looked for it on the amber coast, beyond the Riphean Mountains or even in Britain. Thus Hyperborea became the archetype of all northern utopias: a place of longing that echoes into modern fantasy.
