Ice hockey basics

10 questions · Sports

All about Ice hockey basics: Each team has six players on the ice: five skaters and the goalie. The disc played is called the puck. Each period is 20 minutes of actual play; the clock stops at every stoppage. In a face-off the referee drops the puck between two opposing players. Shooting the puck the length of the ice untouched is icing. A minor penalty lasts 2 minutes; the team plays short-handed for that time. Having an extra man is a power play. A free shot against the goalie is a penalty shot. Three goals by one player is a hat-trick. Good to know: On a penalty a team must pull a player, leaving it short-handed. Pucks are frozen before the game so they bounce less. If the score is level, overtime and if needed a penalty shootout follow. There are nine fixed face-off spots on the ice. After icing the face-off is in the offending team's own zone and it may not change lines. A player usually sits two minutes in the penalty box; his team is short-handed until then. If the power-play team scores, the opponent's minor penalty ends immediately.
