Igor Stravinsky
11 questions · Music
Igor Stravinsky, born in 1882 in Oranienbaum near St Petersburg, first dutifully studied law: until Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov recognised the young man's talent and taught him privately. His breakthrough came through ballet: the impresario Sergei Diaghilev engaged the unknown composer for his Paris-based Ballets Russes, and within just three years came three milestones: 'The Firebird' (1910), 'Petrushka' (1911) and then the earthquake.
On 29 May 1913, 'The Rite of Spring' premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris: pounding rhythms, slashing dissonances, a pagan sacrificial rite as dance. The audience erupted: uproar, scuffles, the most famous scandal in music history. Within a few years the succès de scandale had become a classic; its rhythmic language changed 20th-century music forever.
Stravinsky was the great chameleon: after his Russian phase he reinvented himself in exile (first Switzerland, then France) as a neoclassicist ('Pulcinella', 'Oedipus Rex', the 'Symphony of Psalms'); after moving to the USA, the septuagenarian even experimented with the twelve-tone technique of his old antipode Schoenberg. Revolution and world wars left the cosmopolitan permanently homeless: he lived in Hollywood among writers and film stars and became a US citizen in 1945.
Did you know that Stravinsky was also a legendary wit? 'Good composers do not borrow, they steal,' runs one of his most famous quips. He died in New York in 1971, aged 88 and is buried in Venice, near his old companion Diaghilev, on the cemetery island of San Michele.
