Ingmar Bergman

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Ingmar Bergman, born in Sweden in 1918, was one of the most important directors of auteur cinema: films, that is, shaped entirely by the personal signature of their creator. As the son of a strict pastor, his works wrestled all his life with the great questions. Bergman's films deal with faith and doubt, loneliness, death and the abysses of human relationships. World-famous is "The Seventh Seal", in which a knight in medieval Sweden plays chess with Death personified. Other classics are "Wild Strawberries" and "Persona". With his serious, profound visual language Bergman influenced generations of filmmakers. He died in 2007. Good to know: Bergman grew up the son of a stern pastor: the struggle with God and guilt runs through his entire work. The scene in which a knight plays chess with Death, from „The Seventh Seal“, is one of the most famous images in film history. Bergman's films relentlessly ask about the meaning of life, the silence of God and human loneliness. Bergman is seen as the epitome of the auteur: he wrote and directed his deeply personal works himself.
