Isabella I of Castile

9 questions Β· History

Isabella I of Castile, born in 1451, together with her husband Ferdinand of Aragon forged modern Spain out of feuding kingdoms. 1492 became her fateful year: with the conquest of Granada she ended the centuries-long Reconquista, she financed the voyage of Christopher Columbus, who reached America and she expelled Jews and later Muslims from the country. For their religious zeal she and Ferdinand were called β€žthe Catholic Monarchsβ€œ. Good to know: He was to find the sea route to India and reached America instead. For Spain this began its rise as a colonial power. This ended nearly 800 years of Muslim rule in Spain. The conquest completed the Reconquista. The union of Castile and Aragon laid the basis for modern Spain. They ruled together as an equal royal couple. The title honoured their devotion to the Catholic faith. Their fervent religious zeal, however, also had cruel sides. It was to enforce purity of faith: often with brutal violence. Converted Jews in particular came under suspicion.
