Isis

12 questions ยท Mythology

Isis is the Egyptian goddess of magic, motherhood and protection: one of the most powerful and longest-worshipped deities of antiquity. As the faithful wife of Osiris and loving mother of Horus she embodies love, magical power and unshakeable care. Her greatest myth is the resurrection of her murdered husband: through tireless searching and powerful magic she brought Osiris back and then raised their son Horus in hiding until he could reclaim the throne. Her cult spread far beyond Egypt into the Roman Empire; there were temples of Isis even in Rome and London. The image of Isis with the child Horus is seen by some as a forerunner of Christian images of the Madonna. The great sorceress Isis is often depicted with outspread wings; her amulet symbol is the Isis knot (Tyet). Good to know: Isis commands powerful magic and is seen as the ideal mother and protector. Legend says Isis cunningly wrested from the sun god Ra his secret true name and with it his power. Isis gathered the scattered body parts of Osiris and revived him with her magic.
