Ivan the Terrible

9 questions · History

Ivan IV, born in 1530, was the first ruler of Russia to call himself „Tsar“. Energetic and reform-minded as a young man, he later fell into suspicion and cruelty: with his feared secret force, the Oprichnina, he plunged the country into terror. At the same time he expanded the realm enormously and had the famous St Basil’s Cathedral built in Moscow. He has borne the epithet „the Terrible“ for centuries, with reason. Good to know: The word „Tsar“ derives from the Roman „Caesar“. He thereby placed himself among the emperors. The Russian word means more „awe-inspiring“ than „evil“. His cruelty nonetheless made the epithet literally true. In black robes its riders rode murdering across the land. Whole cities like Novgorod were laid waste. A famous painting by Ilya Repin captures the moment. In doing so he tore a hole in his own succession. This gave Russia control of the entire Volga. The road to expansion into Siberia was opened. Its colourful onion domes are a symbol of Russia. Legend says Ivan had the builders blinded so they could build nothing finer.
