Jan van Eyck

17 questions · Art

Jan van Eyck is born around 1390 in the southern Netherlands and becomes the most important painter of early Netherlandish art. He works as court painter and confidant to the powerful Duke of Burgundy, who even sends him on secret diplomatic missions. Van Eyck is thus far more than a craftsman: he is a respected, educated man of his time. His importance lies above all in a revolutionary technique: oil painting. He did not invent it alone, as a persistent legend claims, but he brings it to unimagined perfection. Oil paint allows him wafer-thin, translucent layers of colour and a precision of detail previously impossible: every hair, every fold, every glint of light in a mirror or jewel is captured with almost photographic exactness. His most famous work is the "Arnolfini Portrait", showing a couple in a domestic room: full of hidden symbols and with an ornate convex mirror on the wall in which the whole scene is reflected once more. His greatest work is the vast "Ghent Altarpiece", a multi-panelled folding altar of overwhelming splendour. Van Eyck dies in 1441. His influence on European painting is immense. Did you know that he proudly signed many of his pictures with the motto "As I can": a self-confident declaration of his exceptional skill, unusual for a painter of that early period? Van Eyck brought early Netherlandish oil painting to unheard-of refinement. His enigmatic ‘Arnolfini Portrait’ and the luminous ‘Ghent Altarpiece’ are milestones of art history. Add to them the ‘Madonna of Chancellor Rolin’, ‘The Madonna in the Church’, the ‘Madonna with Canon van der Paele’, ‘Annunciation’, the ‘Dresden Triptych’ and the ‘Crucifixion and Last Judgement diptych’, as well as the portraits ‘Léal Souvenir’ and a ‘Portrait of a Man’ thought to be a self-portrait.
