Janus
12 questions ยท Mythology
Janus is a purely Roman god with no Greek model: the god of beginnings, doorways, gates and transitions. With his two faces turned in opposite directions, he looks at once into the past and the future.
Because every beginning was sacred to him, Janus was invoked first at any start: even before Jupiter. His temple in Rome had a special function: its gates stood open in times of war and were closed only in times of peace. In Rome's long history that happened only rarely.
The month of January, the start of the year, is named after Janus.
Two-faced Janus, god of doorways, beginnings and transitions, carries a key and a staff as his attributes.
Good to know: Janus watches over every beginning, every door and every transition: from the old state to the new. At every sacrifice and prayer Janus was invoked first: even before Jupiter. With two opposite faces Janus looks backward and forward at the same time. The month of January, standing between the old and the new year, is named after him.
