Jean-Luc Godard

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Jean-Luc Godard, born in 1930, was one of the most influential and radical directors in film history and the leading figure of the French "Nouvelle Vague" (New Wave): a movement of young filmmakers who overturned the rules of cinema in the late 1950s. His debut "Breathless" (1960) felt like a liberation: shot with a handheld camera in the street, with casual characters and the famous "jump cuts" that deliberately chopped up smooth narration. Godard saw film as art and political tool at once and experimented tirelessly with form and narrative all his life. Godard remained a combative, uncomfortable artist into old age. He died in 2022. Good to know: Godard started as a film critic before becoming cinema's most radical innovator himself. The „Nouvelle Vague“ („New Wave“) broke all the rules: shot with a handheld camera on the street, often without a script. His 1960 debut „Breathless“ shocked with its casual style and choppy cuts and became the manifesto of the New Wave. Godard's „jump cuts“ (deliberately jarring edits mid-scene) were seen then as taboo-breaking and became his trademark.
