Jesse James

8 questions Β· History

Jesse James, born in Missouri in 1847, became the most famous outlaw of the Wild West after the American Civil War. With the James-Younger gang he robbed banks, stagecoaches and trains and was romanticized as a kind of Robin Hood in parts of the South. In 1882 he was shot from behind by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang, for a reward, while straightening a picture on the wall. Good to know: The gang was made up of Jesse and Frank James and the Younger brothers. Many were former Confederate guerrillas. Train robberies were new and made the gang nationally famous. They often stopped trains at remote spots. Ford was himself a gang member and killed James from behind. The killing made Ford infamous rather than famous. He had just taken off his gun belt to straighten a picture. This defenceless moment made the killing especially notorious. Missouri was his home and refuge. Many Southern sympathizers there admired him. Stories turned the robber into a hero of the common people. In truth the gang mostly kept the loot itself.
