Jimi Hendrix

13 questions · Music

In just four years of fame Jimi Hendrix from the USA changed guitar playing forever, to this day many rank him the greatest and most influential electric guitarist in history. A left-hander, he played a flipped Fender Stratocaster and turned distortion, feedback and the wah-wah pedal into means of expression. With the Jimi Hendrix Experience he wrote classics like ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘Voodoo Child’. On stage he was pure spectacle: at the Monterey festival he set his guitar on fire, and at Woodstock in 1969 he turned the US anthem into a wild, war-questioning storm of sound. In 1970 Hendrix died aged just 27, joining the tragic ‘27 Club’: yet his brief career still shapes rock guitarists today. Good to know: He used feedback and distortion as musical tools. As a left-hander he played a flipped right-handed guitar. His distorted ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ became iconic. Many read it as a critique of war. One of his best-known riffs. The ‘Hendrix chord’ shapes the song. Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison also died at 27.
