Johannes Kepler

10 questions ยท Science

Johannes Kepler, born in Weil der Stadt in 1571, was at once a devout mystic and a sharp calculator and one of the pioneers of modern astronomy. He had meant to become a theologian; a chair of mathematics in Graz turned him towards the stars. As assistant to the Danish observational genius Tycho Brahe, he inherited his decades of extraordinarily precise measurements of the planetary orbits. He puzzled over them for years, especially the wayward orbit of Mars. For the data simply would not fit the perfect circles assumed since antiquity. Kepler's revolutionary insight: the planets do not trace circles but ellipses around the Sun, moving faster the closer they come to it. In three laws named after him he captured planetary motion in exact mathematical form: the foundation on which Newton would later explain gravity. Kepler also worked on optics, explained how the telescope and the human eye function, and computed the Rudolphine Tables, which allowed planetary positions to be predicted. His life was overshadowed by war, plague and misfortune: several of his children died young, and he even had to defend his own mother for years in a witch trial, saving her from torture. In 1630 Kepler died impoverished in Regensburg, on a journey to collect wages he was owed.
