Johannes Vermeer

19 questions · Art

Johannes Vermeer is born in 1632 in Delft in the Netherlands and spends his whole life there. Astonishingly little is known about him: no letters, no diaries. He deals in art on the side, has many children and lives in modest circumstances. It is not even known for certain who taught him to paint. His few pictures speak all the more loudly. Vermeer paints almost exclusively quiet scenes from everyday middle-class life: a woman reading a letter, a maid pouring milk, a girl at a window. These calm interiors he transforms into pure poetry. His greatest secret is light: usually falling from a window on the left, soft and almost tangible, gliding over walls, fabrics and faces. His most famous works are the enigmatic "Girl with a Pearl Earring", often called "the Mona Lisa of the North", and the "View of Delft", one of the most beautiful cityscapes in painting. Vermeer works extremely slowly and leaves only around thirty-five paintings: each of them a jewel. Vermeer dies impoverished in 1675 and is afterwards almost entirely forgotten. Only two hundred years later is he rediscovered, and he has since been regarded as one of the greatest masters of painting. Did you know that researchers suspect Vermeer used a "camera obscura" (an early optical device, almost a forerunner of the photographic camera) to achieve his astonishing light effects? Vermeer’s quiet interiors live on light: above all ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and ‘The Milkmaid’, together with the sweeping ‘View of Delft’ and the intimate ‘The Little Street’. Again and again he shows women reading and making music (‘Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window’, ‘Woman in Blue Reading a Letter’, ‘Woman Holding a Balance’, ‘The Concert’ and ‘The Music Lesson’) as well as the scholars ‘The Astronomer’ and ‘The Geographer’ and his great allegory ‘The Art of Painting’.
