Judo: basics
8 questions · Sports
Judo (basics): 'Ju' means gentle/yielding, 'do' the way: the idea: use the opponent's force rather than fighting against it. Judo was founded in Japan. An ippon (full point) ends the bout e.g. by a clean throw on the back or a held pin. The judo uniform is the judogi.
Beginners wear white; through yellow, orange, green, blue and brown the path leads to the black belt (dan grades). Throwing technique is called nage-waza. The ground hold-down is called osae-komi. Every bout begins and ends with a bow.
Good to know: „Ju“ (gentle) and „Do“ (way): yielding to use the opponent's own force is the core principle. Judo was founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano in Japan. An ippon ends the bout instantly: like a knockout in boxing. The judogi is tied with a coloured belt (obi) that shows the rank. Beyond black there are red belts for the very highest master grades (dan). A perfect throw onto the back scores an instant ippon. Holding the opponent down for about 20 seconds scores an ippon. The bow (rei) shows respect for the partner and the dojo.
