Judo: grades & competition
8 questions · Sports
Judo (grades & competition): The student grades are 'kyu'; the master grades (from black belt) are 'dan'. The master grades are the dan grades. Judo has been Olympic since 1964. The world body is the IJF.
The homeland and top nation is Japan. The mat area is called the tatami. Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano. Judo developed from jiu-jitsu.
Good to know: The order of belt colours (white to brown) can vary slightly from country to country. The highest dan grades sometimes wear red-and-white or red belts. Judo became Olympic at Tokyo 1964: fitting for its home country. The IJF has over 200 member federations worldwide. Japan regularly wins the most medals at the Olympics and World Championships. The 'tatami' mats cushion falls. Kano developed judo from the older jiu-jitsu, stressing education and respect. Judo arose as a more sporting, 'gentle' evolution of jiu-jitsu. From black upward you count dan grades; the highest (red-and-white and red) are reached by only a few masters. Once you know them, you suddenly spot them everywhere again.
