Judo: techniques & terms
8 questions · Sports
Judo (techniques & terms): 'Tori' performs the technique, 'uke' receives it: so throws can be practised safely. The smaller score is the waza-ari. A penalty is called a shido. The major hip throw is o-goshi.
Leg and foot techniques are called ashi-waza. Ne-waza covers hold-downs, joint locks and chokes on the ground. The arm lock is called kansetsu-waza. The training hall is the dojo.
Good to know: When training, tori and uke constantly swap roles: throwing and falling are always learned together. Two waza-ari together make one ippon. Three shido mean disqualification: the opponent wins. The hip throw o-goshi is one of the first throws beginners learn. Foot sweeps look effortless but demand perfect timing. In ne-waza (groundwork) you win without a throw: by pin, lock or choke. Locks and chokes are only allowed from adult age. You bow when entering the dojo. Two waza-ari add up to an ippon: so a bout can also be won in two steps. A shido punishes passive or unsporting behaviour; three of them mean defeat.
