Karate: basics

8 questions · Sports

Karate (basics): 'Kara' means empty, 'te' hand: fighting without weapons, using only body techniques. Karate originated on Okinawa. The 'kata' is a choreographed form; in competition it is judged on precision and expression. Fighting a real opponent is called kumite. The straight punch is called tsuki. The block technique is called uke. As in judo, coloured kyu belts (white to brown) lead to the black dan belt. The shout is called kiai. Good to know: „Kara“ (empty) and „Te“ (hand): karate needs no weapons at all. Karate developed on Okinawa, influenced by Chinese martial arts. Some katas are centuries old and count as the „textbook“ of a style. In competition kumite hits are controlled: full force is forbidden. In tsuki the fist rotates at the last moment. Blocks deflect the attack rather than stopping it head-on. The black belt is no endpoint: the numbered dan grades begin beyond it. The 'kiai' is a powerful shout at the moment of impact. When Okinawa was under a weapons ban, its people developed unarmed fighting: hence „empty hand“.
