Karl Marx, born in Trier in 1818, the son of a lawyer, took his doctorate on ancient philosophy and, as editor of the 'Rheinische Zeitung', proved so inconvenient that Prussian censorship shut the paper down. A life in exile followed (Paris, Brussels, finally London) always accompanied by his friend, co-author and financier Friedrich Engels, the factory owner's son without whom the Marx family would likely have starved. Marx inverted Hegel's dialectic: not ideas drive history, but material conditions: how people produce, and who owns the means of production. All history so far is for him a 'history of class struggles': so begins the 'Communist Manifesto', which Marx and Engels published in 1848 on the eve of the revolutions, with the famous closing line: 'Workers of all countries, unite!' In his London exile, Marx then spent decades in the reading room of the British Museum working on his masterpiece 'Capital' (volume 1: 1867): an anatomy of capitalism, whose core he saw in exploitation: in the 'surplus value' that labour creates and the capitalist pockets. Religion he had early analysed as the 'opium of the people'; a consolation that soothes away earthly misery; and he wrote into the philosophers' album: they 'have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.' Marx died in London in 1883; barely a dozen people stood at his grave in Highgate, where Engels prophesied: 'His name will endure through the ages.' He was right, for good and for ill: hardly any thinker shaped the 20th century more; labour movements and welfare states invoked him, as did dictatorships whose crimes were committed in his name. Did you know that volumes 2 and 3 of 'Capital' remained unfinished? Engels published them from the papers Marx left behind.
