Katsushika Hokusai

17 questions · Art

Katsushika Hokusai is born in 1760 in Edo, today's Tokyo. He is the great master of the Japanese colour woodblock print, an art in which a picture is carved by hand into wood blocks and then printed many times onto paper. Hokusai works incredibly hard throughout his long life and creates tens of thousands of drawings, prints and books. His most famous work is "The Great Wave off Kanagawa": an immense, breaking wave with white claws of foam threatens to swallow three small boats, while in the distance, tiny and calm, the sacred Mount Fuji rises. This picture belongs to the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and is today one of the best-known images in the world. Hokusai's art had an enormous influence on Western painting. When Japanese colour woodblock prints reached Europe in the 19th century, the Impressionists and painters such as Van Gogh and Monet were thrilled by the flat colour fields, the bold framing and the clear lines: people spoke of "Japonism". Hokusai was an artist of transformations: over the course of his life he changed his artist's name more than thirty times. He died in 1849 at almost ninety and is said to have declared on his deathbed that, given just five more years, he could have become a "true painter". Did you know that Hokusai also drew thick volumes of sketches of every kind, the "Hokusai Manga" and that the name of today's Japanese comics, "manga", derives from them? With ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ Hokusai created perhaps the most famous Japanese image of all: part of his series ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’, which also includes ‘Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji)’ and ‘Lightnings below the Summit’. He kept circling Fuji in ‘One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji’, ‘Kajikazawa in Kai Province’, ‘Sundai in Edo’ and ‘Lake Suwa in Shinano Province’. His manuals ‘Hokusai Manga’ and the eerie ‘One Hundred Ghost Stories’ show his full range.
