Khufu, known in Greek as Cheops, ruled from about 2620 to 2580 BC and had the most famous building in human history erected: the Great Pyramid of Giza. At an original height of some 146 metres it remained the world's tallest structure for almost 4000 years and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. All the stranger, then, how little we know about the man himself: the only certain likeness is an ivory figure seven and a half centimetres tall. Two thousand years later Herodotus painted him as a cruel tyrant: whether justly, nobody knows. Good to know: Some 2.3 million blocks of stone were moved for it. It was built by paid workers in shifts: not by slaves, as was long claimed. The other six vanished through earthquakes, fire or demolition. It is also the oldest of the seven and has outlived them all. Today it is about 139 metres: the tip and the casing are missing. „Cheops“ is the Greek form that reached us through Herodotus. The full name means roughly „Khnum protects me“.
