9 questions · Economics

Klaus-Michael Kühne, born in Hamburg in 1937 and died in August 2026 aged 89, was the quiet king of global logistics. He built the family firm Kühne + Nagel into the largest freight-forwarding and logistics company in the world: hardly any goods travel the globe without such firms. Kühne was also the largest single shareholder of the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd and took a stake in Lufthansa. In his home city of Hamburg he is known as a generous but also demanding patron, for instance of the football club HSV. Good to know: His company organises the transport of goods around the world. Without such firms world trade would grind to a halt. The family firm was founded in Bremen in 1890. Kühne built it into the world leader in sea freight. The line operates huge container ships. During the pandemic it made record profits. In the crisis he came in as a major shareholder. Thus he was involved in air, sea and land transport. He backed the traditional club with a lot of money. His influence there was generous but also controversial.
