Lady Gaga
10 questions · Society & Everyday
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is born in New York in 1986. As a child she plays piano and performs in clubs; as a young woman she invents a persona that the whole world will soon know: "Lady Gaga". The name is a nod to the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga". With her debut album 'The Fame' and hits such as "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", she becomes a pop star overnight in 2008.
What sets Gaga apart from the start is the fusion of catchy music with radical art. Her performances and costumes are extravagant and provocative: from the notorious "meat dress" to opulent stage shows. For many of her fans, whom she calls "Little Monsters", she becomes an icon of self-acceptance; her song "Born This Way" becomes an anthem for diversity and the queer community.
But Gaga is more than a pop provocateur. She proves herself a serious musician: in 2018 she plays the lead in the film musical 'A Star Is Born' and wins an Oscar for the song "Shallow". She also shows her range as a jazz singer alongside Tony Bennett and as an actress in films such as 'House of Gucci'.
Gaga is also an advocate for mental health and, with her mother, founded a charity dedicated to the wellbeing of young people. With numerous Grammys, an Oscar and one of the most versatile careers in modern pop, Lady Gaga is one of the defining artists of her generation.
