Laozi (also Lao Tzu) is the semi-legendary founding figure of Daoism, one of the great spiritual currents of China. According to tradition he lived in the 6th century BC, around the time of Confucius; almost nothing about his life is historically certain. He is credited with the "Daodejing" (Tao Te Ching), one of the most influential and most translated books in the world. His central concept is the "Dao": "the Way", the ungraspable underlying principle of all things. A core idea is "wu wei", "non-forcing": instead of struggling against the natural course of things, one should act in harmony with it. The quiet, nature-bound wisdom of Daoism influences the thought, art and art of living of East Asia to this day.
