Leif Eriksson

10 questions · History

Leif Erikson was a Viking seafarer who lived around the year 1000 and in all likelihood was the first European to set foot on the American continent, some 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Leif came from a family of bold explorers: his father was Erik the Red, who had settled Greenland. From Greenland Leif sailed further west and reached a coast in present-day Canada, which he called "Vinland" because of the berries or vines growing there. Archaeological finds of a Viking settlement in northern Newfoundland confirm that Norsemen were indeed there. This achievement was long forgotten; the sagas kept it alive. Today Leif Erikson is regarded as the true "discoverer" of America. Good to know: Leif Eriksson was a Viking who grew up in Greenland, which his father had settled. Around the year 1000 Leif Eriksson reached North America: about 500 years before Columbus. He named the land he found „Vinland“: possibly for wild berries or vines. His father Erik the Red had settled Greenland and given it its enticing name to attract settlers.
