Leonardo da Vinci

19 questions · Art

Leonardo da Vinci is born in 1452, the illegitimate son of a notary, in the village of Vinci near Florence. A classical scholarly education is denied to him, but his thirst for knowledge knows no bounds. As a teenager he enters the Florentine workshop of the master Andrea del Verrocchio, where he learns painting, sculpture and engineering. Before long the pupil surpasses the teacher. Leonardo becomes the very embodiment of the Renaissance "universal genius". He is painter, sculptor, architect, anatomist, engineer and inventor all in one. Into his notebooks he draws flying machines, war engines and the human body with an accuracy far ahead of his time. As a painter he develops "sfumato", a technique of soft, blurred transitions that gives his figures their mysterious, living expression. His paintings are rare, but each is a milestone. The "Mona Lisa", with her enigmatic smile, becomes the most famous picture in the world; the mural "The Last Supper" is regarded as a peak of Renaissance painting. Leonardo often works agonisingly slowly and leaves much unfinished: which is precisely what makes the few completed works so precious. In his final years the King of France invites him to his court, where Leonardo dies in 1519. To this day he fascinates as a man who effortlessly crossed the boundaries between art and science. Did you know that he wrote his famous notes in mirror writing: from right to left, so that they can only be read comfortably in a mirror? At the very summit of art history stand Leonardo’s ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘The Last Supper’, together with the famous proportion study ‘Vitruvian Man’. Also from his hand: ‘Lady with an Ermine’, the rediscovered ‘Salvator Mundi’, the ‘Virgin of the Rocks’, ‘Ginevra de’ Benci’, ‘The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne’, the ‘Benois Madonna’, ‘La Belle Ferronnière’, ‘Saint John the Baptist’ and the unfinished ‘Adoration of the Magi’.
