Lionel Messi, born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1987, is for many the greatest footballer in history. As a child he had a growth disorder; FC Barcelona brought the small, hugely gifted boy to Spain at 13 and paid for his treatment: the start of an unparalleled bond. At Barcelona Messi became the heart of one of the best teams of all time. With his irresistible left foot, his agility and his eye for a teammate he won countless titles and set one scoring record after another. He received the Ballon d'Or as World Player of the Year more often than any other player. One thing was missing for a long time: a major title with the national team. After several painful final defeats, his dream finally came true in 2022, when he led Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar, for many the crowning glory of his career. In Argentina he is affectionately called "La Pulga", the Flea, for his small size and lightning-quick movements. Messi embodies a quiet, unassuming superstar who lets his football do the talking.
