Loki

12 questions · Mythology

Loki is the trickster of Norse mythology: god of cunning, fire and shape-shifting, a changeling who stands between the worlds of gods and giants. Sometimes he rescues the Aesir from trouble with clever ideas, sometimes he plunges them into disaster with the very same schemes. His pranks grow more malicious over time, until he causes the death of the shining god Baldr. As punishment the gods bind him beneath a serpent whose venom drips on him: until the end of the world. For in the end it is Loki who will unleash the twilight of the gods, Ragnarök, and fight against the gods at the side of the giants. His children are three of the most terrible beings in mythology. From Loki’s unions come fearsome monsters: the wolf Fenrir, the world serpent and Hel, mistress of the realm of the dead. He also bears the guilt for Baldr’s death. Good to know: Loki stands between gods and giants; as a shape-shifter he takes any form: even that of a mare. As a mare, Loki gave birth to the eight-legged horse Sleipnir, which later carried Odin.
