Louis IX (the Saint)

9 questions · History

Louis IX, born in 1214, is the only king of France to be canonised by the Church, as „Saint Louis“. Pious and remarkably just for his time, he is said to have held court himself under an oak at Vincennes. In Paris he built the magnificent Sainte-Chapelle to house Christ’s Crown of Thorns. Twice he went on crusade to the Holy Land; on the second he died in 1270 before Tunis of an epidemic. Good to know: He was canonised barely 30 years after his death. Many churches and cities worldwide bear his name. On the first he was even captured in Egypt. Faith was the driving force of his whole life. His second crusade ended before it had properly begun. His bones were brought back to France. Its vast stained-glass windows are among the finest of Gothic art. He built it specifically as a shrine for precious relics. He bought it dearly from Constantinople and brought it solemnly to Paris. The Sainte-Chapelle was built especially for it. Legend says he gave judgement himself under the oak at Vincennes.
