Louis XIV

10 questions ยท History

Louis XIV, born in 1638, was King of France and the epitome of the absolute monarch. Because of his display of splendour and his emblem, the sun, he was called the "Sun King". With over 72 years on the throne, Louis had the longest documented reign of any European monarch. He concentrated all power in his own person; the phrase attributed to him, "I am the state", captures this self-image. He bound the powerful nobility to his court: in the enormous palace of Versailles, which he built up into the glittering centre of France. Under Louis, France became the leading power in Europe, but his many wars and the luxury of the court overstrained the state's finances. He died in 1715. Good to know: Louis XIV ruled as an absolute king over France, then Europe's leading power. As the โ€žSun Kingโ€œ, Louis made the sun his emblem: everything was to revolve around him. Louis sat on the throne for over 72 years: the longest reign of any monarch in European history. Louis expanded Versailles into Europe's most opulent palace and bound the nobility to him there.
