Louis XVI

9 questions · History

Louis XVI, born in 1754, was the last king of France before the Revolution. Good-natured but hesitant, he presided over a state sinking into debt. In 1789 the French Revolution broke out: the people stormed the Bastille and the monarchy began to totter. An attempt to flee failed miserably, and finally the king was condemned to death as „Citizen Louis Capet“. In 1793 his head fell to the guillotine; France became a republic. Good to know: It ended absolute monarchy and changed Europe forever. „Liberty, equality, fraternity“ became its motto. The storming of the Bastille is seen as the start of the Revolution. The 14th of July is still France’s national holiday. The Austrian princess became a symbol of courtly extravagance to the people. She too ended under the guillotine. The failed escape destroyed the last trust in the king. From then on many regarded him as a traitor to the nation. He was condemned as an ordinary citizen, „Louis Capet“. His execution shocked the monarchies of all Europe.
