Lower Saxony
9 questions · Geography
Lower Saxony is the second-largest German state by area and lies in the north-west of the country. Around 8.1 million people live here, many of them rurally: between the North Sea and the Harz mountains stretch marshes, moors and heathland. The capital is Hanover, known for its trade fairs, above all the Hannover Messe as the world's largest industrial fair.
The state is famous for Volkswagen in Wolfsburg; the company is its biggest employer and shapes an entire town founded specifically for the car plant. Its landmark is the Lüneburg Heath, which blooms violet in August and, with its juniper bushes and moorland sheep, feels wonderfully out of time.
The river Weser flows through Lower Saxony, and the coat of arms shows a white horse, the Saxon Steed, leaping across a red field. To the north the state borders the North Sea with its Wadden Sea, and to the west the Netherlands.
Did you know that the Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site? Twice a day the sea withdraws and reveals a habitat that has hardly any equal in the world.
