Lucky Luciano

11 questions · History

Charles „Lucky„ Luciano, born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily in 1897, is regarded as the father of modern organized crime in the United States. He divided New York among the „Five Families„ and set up the „Commission„, a board meant to settle disputes between the Mafia clans. He is said to have earned his nickname by surviving a brutal beating. After a prison term he was deported to Italy, where he died of a heart attack at Naples airport in 1962. Good to know: Only in the USA did he Americanize his name to Charles Luciano. He was born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily. The Commission was meant to prevent wars between the families. It is seen as the governing structure of the American Cosa Nostra. The 'Five Families' still divide New York's underworld among themselves. They are Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese. He was abducted and beaten nearly to death and survived, scarred. Others trace the name to his luck at gambling. Despite deportation he kept steering some business from exile.
