Ludwig II of Bavaria, born in 1845, went down in history as the „fairy-tale king“. Instead of ruling, the shy, dreamy king lost himself in visions of knightly castles and worlds of opera. He built lavish fairy-tale palaces such as Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee and supported the composer Richard Wagner. Over his castles he ran up enormous debts. In 1886 he was declared incapable and died a few days later in mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg. Good to know: It sits like something out of a dream above the Allgäu mountains. The castle is said to be the model for the Disney fairy-tale castle. He preferred to live in his dream worlds rather than in politics. In Bavaria many still fondly call him „our Kini“. Without the king Wagner could hardly have completed many of his operas. Wagner’s world of legends and knights is mirrored in Ludwig’s castles. Herrenchiemsee was intended as a Bavarian Versailles. Building his dream castles swallowed vast sums. The king spent far more than his private purse could bear.
