Mahavira

10 questions · Religion & Belief

Mahavira probably lived in the 6th or 5th century BC in ancient India and is regarded as the defining figure of Jainism, one of the oldest religions in the world. He was a contemporary of the Buddha and, like him, came from a noble family, which he left to seek liberation as an ascetic. At the centre of Mahavira's teaching stands "ahimsa": absolute non-violence towards all living beings. Devout Jains take meticulous care to harm no creature, not even the smallest insect. Added to this are strict self-discipline, truthfulness and the renunciation of possessions. The goal is the liberation of the soul from the cycle of rebirths. Mahavira's commandment of non-violence later also influenced thinkers such as Mahatma Gandhi. Good to know: Mahavira decisively shaped Jainism, one of India's oldest religions. The core of his teaching is „ahimsa“: the principle of harming no living being. Without harming any creature. Strict Jains avoid harming life so rigorously that some monks sweep the ground before them so as not to tread on insects.
