Malaria

12 questions · History

Malaria is one of humanity's oldest and most consequential diseases and to this day one of the deadliest. It is caused not by a bacterium or virus, but by tiny parasites of the genus Plasmodium, which enter the blood through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. There they attack red blood cells and trigger the typical bouts of fever with chills. The name „malaria“ comes from Italian and means „bad air“; the disease was long blamed on the vapours of swamps, until the true cause was recognised. Malaria shaped the course of history: it hindered military campaigns, cost countless lives during the building of the Panama Canal and still makes wide tropical regions hard to live in. Every year hundreds of millions of people fall ill, above all in Africa, and hundreds of thousands die: most of them children under five. For a long time quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree was the only remedy. Today modern drugs, treated mosquito nets and first vaccines help in the fight against the disease, whose final eradication remains a great goal of global health.
