Marco Polo

10 questions · History

Marco Polo, born around 1254 in Venice, was a merchant and the most famous traveller of the European Middle Ages. As a young man he set off with his father and uncle on a decades-long journey east that took him along the Silk Road all the way to China. At the court of the Mongol Great Khan Kublai Khan, Marco Polo stayed for many years and reportedly served him as an envoy. After his return he was taken prisoner in a Venetian war; there he dictated his experiences to a fellow prisoner. The resulting book (often called "Il Milione" or "The Travels") became a bestseller. For many Europeans it was the first vivid picture of distant Asia. Marco Polo died in 1324. Good to know: Marco Polo came from a Venetian merchant family and set out for Asia as a teenager. Marco Polo spent over 20 years in Asia, most of it in Mongol-ruled China. At the court of the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan, Marco Polo supposedly served as envoy and official. His travel book „Il Milione“ was written in prison: a fellow inmate wrote down Marco's tales.
