Marlene Dietrich, born in Berlin in 1901, became the first German world diva and a style icon of the 20th century. Her international breakthrough came in 1930 as the sultry nightclub singer Lola Lola in Josef von Sternberg's "The Blue Angel". That same year she went to Hollywood, where she made a series of glamorous films with Sternberg and, with her smoky voice, tailcoat and top hat, shaped the image of the androgynous, aloof femme fatale. A firm opponent of Nazism, she took US citizenship and sang for the Allied troops during the Second World War. Her songs such as "Lili Marleen" became world-famous. Marlene Dietrich died in Paris in 1992 and was buried in Berlin. Good to know: Director Josef von Sternberg brought Dietrich to Hollywood, where she became one of the greatest divas of her time.
