Martin Heidegger

13 questions · Philosophy

Martin Heidegger, born in 1889 in Meßkirch in Baden, the son of a cooper and sexton, began as a student of Catholic theology, turned to philosophy, and became assistant to Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology. In 1927 appeared the work that made him world-famous overnight: 'Being and Time'. Heidegger posed the old question of the 'meaning of Being' in a radically new way: not abstractly, but starting from the human being, whom he calls 'Dasein': the being for whom, in its very being, that being is at issue. Dasein is 'being-in-the-world', mostly scattered into the 'they': into what 'one' does and says. Existence becomes authentic only when it faces its own finitude: the human being is 'being-towards-death', and anxiety (not fear of something, but of the nothing) can call it back to itself. Then the darkest turn: in 1933 Heidegger became rector of Freiburg University, joined the Nazi party and publicly promoted the regime; towards his Jewish teacher Husserl he behaved shabbily. He resigned the rectorate after a year but remained a party member until 1945 and never publicly apologised. The posthumously published 'Black Notebooks' further document antisemitic patterns of thought. How this stain squares with the thinker's stature is perhaps the sharpest controversy in 20th-century philosophy. For the influence is enormous: Sartre's existentialism, Gadamer's hermeneutics, deconstruction and architectural theory all draw on Heidegger. The late Heidegger, thinking from the 'end of metaphysics', reflected on technology ('enframing'), on language ('the house of Being') and on 'releasement' (Gelassenheit). Did you know that Heidegger preferred to work in his Black Forest hut at Todtnauberg, without electricity or running water? He died in 1976 and lies buried in Meßkirch.
