Martin Luther

10 questions · Religion & Belief

Martin Luther, born in Germany in 1483, was a monk and theologian and the trigger of the Reformation, which split the Christian church forever and changed Europe. Luther was outraged by abuses in the Catholic Church, especially the sale of indulgences, in which the remission of punishment for sins was promised in exchange for money. In 1517 he published his 95 Theses, which became the spark of the Reformation. His core idea: a person is saved by faith and God's grace alone, not by money or works. Despite excommunication and outlawry he stood firm. Luther translated the Bible into German and thereby also shaped the German language. Protestantism emerged from the Reformation. He died in 1546. Good to know: Martin Luther's criticism triggered the Reformation and split Western Christianity.
