10 questions · Film & Cinema

Martin Scorsese, born in New York in 1942, is regarded as one of the greatest living directors. Growing up in the Italian-American neighbourhood of Little Italy, he made his origins and the streets of New York the heart of many of his films. Scorsese's works often tell of violence, guilt, ambition and remorse, with fast-paced imagery and powerful music. Among his classics are "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas". For decades he had a close collaboration with the actor Robert De Niro, later also with Leonardo DiCaprio. Scorsese is also a passionate preserver of film history and campaigns for the restoration of old films. For "The Departed" he received the Best Director Oscar. Good to know: As a sickly, asthmatic child, Scorsese spent much time at the cinema and watched the rough life of Little Italy that shaped his films. „Taxi Driver“, with the line „You talkin' to me?“, made Robert De Niro a definitive star.
