Max Planck

10 questions · Science

Max Planck, born in Kiel in 1858, was a reserved, conservative scholar and yet became, against his will, the revolutionary who ushered in a completely new physics. He had actually been advised against studying physics, as it was "essentially complete". Planck would prove the opposite. To solve a stubborn puzzle of heat radiation, in 1900 he ventured a radical assumption: energy is not given off in arbitrary amounts but only in tiny, indivisible portions: quanta. With that, quantum physics was born, transforming our picture of atoms, light and matter forever. The constant of nature he introduced, the Planck constant h, is among the most important numbers in physics. In 1918 Planck received the Nobel Prize. His life was overshadowed by grievous blows of fate: he lost several children, and his son Erwin was executed by the Nazis in 1945 for alleged involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler. Planck nonetheless stayed in Germany and tried to save science through the darkest years. In his honour, the largest German research organisation today bears the name Max Planck Society. He died in 1947.
