Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
9 questions · Geography
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lies in the north-east of Germany on the Baltic Sea and, with around 1.6 million inhabitants, is the most sparsely populated German state. Travelling here you mostly see space: fields, tree-lined avenues, beech forests and more than 2,000 lakes, among them the Müritz, the largest lake lying entirely within Germany.
The state is famous for its Baltic coast with the islands of Rügen and Usedom, the chalk cliffs at the Königsstuhl and the imperial-era seaside resorts with their white spa architecture. The capital is Schwerin, and that is where the landmark stands: Schwerin Castle, a fairy-tale building with turrets and a golden dome on an island in the lake: today the seat of the state parliament.
The coat of arms combines the symbols of its regions, above all a bull's head for Mecklenburg and a griffin for Pomerania. On the coast lie the Hanseatic cities of Rostock, Wismar and Stralsund, whose brick Gothic architecture is World Heritage.
Did you know that Germany's longest pier is here? At Heringsdorf on Usedom it reaches over 500 metres out to sea.
