Medusa is the most famous of the three Gorgon monsters of Greek mythology. Instead of hair, living snakes writhe around her head, and her gaze is so terrible that anyone who looks into her eyes instantly turns to stone. Medusa was once, legend says, a beautiful woman who was transformed into a monster by Athena. Alone among the Gorgons she was mortal and so became the target of the hero Perseus. With a mirror-shield to avoid her deadly gaze, Perseus beheaded Medusa. Her head kept its petrifying power and became a protective emblem on Athena's shield, the aegis. Of the three Gorgons (her sisters were Stheno and Euryale) only Medusa was mortal, and that is exactly why Perseus chose her. With Athena's mirror-polished shield as rear-view and the Cap of Hades to make him invisible, the coup succeeded. Her face became the βgorgoneionβ, an apotropaic charm on temples and shields; Caravaggio captured her scream on a round shield, Ovid had coral spring from her gaze and Versace made her a logo.
